Slap Snax

A New Way to Snack

Project: Slap Snax, interactive food play
Designed Through: University of Minnesota, Twin Cities - Product Design
Team Members: Annie Yang, Anna Makousky, Sam Gardner, Ty Borrell, and Josiah Nelson

The requirement through this project involved creating a toy through the University of Minnesota's Toy Product Design class that involved food. With this idea, we started with ideation, worked through prototypes, and learned about user experience design through this project.

Our first step was narrowing down the frame of what we wanted to work on. This was done by group brainstorming and ideation sessions, individual brainstorming, sketching, and community outreach leading us to come up with the six designs below.

Brainstorming Ideas

With more community outreach and feedback, we decided to proceed and innovate three different ideas from the popcorn ball and PBX-1. This lead to the iterations below.

Popcorn Ball
PBX-1

The popcorn ball was iterated to include two different launchers as well as the initial idea of being able to shake a ball to play with it while it popped. The PBX-1 idea evolved to include a spy themed lunch box, a puzzle box for food, and a poncho to help conceal food. The iteration of concealing food was well received by our audience at the local elementary school, and thus we continued down this path with even more iterations including drink concealing headphones before ultimately landing on Slap Snax.

Slap Snax combines slap bracelets with the idea of hiding food inside. They can be worn on your wrist, water bottle, bike handles, or even your backpack! The product features a spandex outer shell to prevent snacks from being crushed, a soft cotton backing for comfort, and an inner ripstop shell to prevent food and crumbs from leaving the package. The inside includes a division to allow for two different snacks. Lastly, the product includes a removable inner band to allow the product to be machine washable.
